The Netherlands donates prison transport buses to Ukraine

The Netherlands is donating twenty prison transport buses to Ukraine’s prison service this year, according to a press statement by Minister for Legal Protection and Prisons, Claudia van Bruggen. She formally handed over the first four vehicles in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv.

Ukraine’s prison system has been under severe pressure due to the war, facing shortages of equipment, including vehicles used to transport detainees.

Ukraine therefore requested assistance through European channels. The Netherlands is responding to that request by donating twenty used but technically well‑maintained buses from the Custodial Institutions Agency.

The remaining sixteen vehicles will be delivered later this year. According to Van Bruggen, the donation contributes to the safety and continuity of Ukrainian society while giving the vehicles a second life. The Netherlands and Ukraine have also agreed to further strengthen cooperation between their prison services.
