The Netherlands is extending its military training support for Ukraine until the end of 2028 and will shift a large part of that effort from the United Kingdom to Germany. Defence Minister Yeşilgöz announced this in a letter to parliament ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (Defence) meeting on 12 May.

Since 2022, the Netherlands has provided trainers to Operation Interflex in the United Kingdom. From June 2026 onwards, the current Dutch contribution will be deployed within the EU Military Assistance Mission for Ukraine (EUMAM) in Germany. Since its launch, EUMAM has trained more than 86,000 Ukrainian soldiers.

Courses F-16 and minehunters

The cabinet has decided to extend the Dutch contribution to EUMAM until 15 November 2028. The costs are estimated at €17.5 million and will be financed from the Budget for International Security. In addition, the Netherlands will continue to provide specialised training, including courses related to F‑16 fighter jets and minehunters, and will extend marine training programmes until September 2027.

According to the government, continued support for Ukraine’s armed forces remains essential for as long as Russian aggression continues. The focus is on sustained military assistance and close cooperation with European and NATO partners.
