In The Hague, the Dutch government has forcefully condemned the violence surrounding asylum reception centres, including recent incidents in Loosdrecht. Yet behind this unified response lies a deeper problem: the coalition of D66, VVD and CDA still lacks a workable solution to the ongoing pressure on the asylum system and the social unrest that accompanies it.

At the heart of the issue is the failure to agree on a stricter yet practical asylum policy. Discussions have dragged on in The Hague for years, but concrete measures to curb inflow or significantly ease the burden on reception facilities remain elusive. As a result, the government continues to operate in crisis mode —scrambling to arrange additional accommodation at short notice without addressing the underlying structural challenges.
